  • Mother's sacrifice

[Read the article: Tackling "partial birth" abortion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"It is life or health of the woman"

Amanda, I agree - the issue here is the life/health of the woman versus the fetus.

By using the term "mother", it evokes the notion of sacrifice that women are supposed to make when they become mothers - meaning a "mother" is supposed to be willing to give her health/life for her child.

  • I don't consider myself to be...

[Read the article: See how they run]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Stupid! But you are, 'lil Ricky.

  • Wear protection, Yellow-dog!

[Read the article: They're still fair and balanced]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I bring a kevlar vest to work from now on! You're right about trying to be civil and magnanimous with these repugs. It just blows back on you, so forget it!

  • Stupid, stupid

[Read the article: Winey play dates]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

stupid story! What is with these people?

I recall countless neighborhood barbecues, family picnics, etc where parents drank wine, beer or even "cocktails". For some reason, no one became an alcoholic, got into brawls, or nabbed for DUI. I guess my parents and their friends were able to figure out that moderate alcohol consumption is something adults can do, every aspect of their lives did not have to revolve around us kids.

  • Dont' believe the hype

[Read the article: Lost faith in the GOP]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"So, big tent, yes, if possible, but we do not give up our core values to accommodate some latecomers to the dance"

I'm with DZ on this one. Over time, Americans are actually becoming more socially/culturally liberal. Acceptance of gays, reproductive rights, racial integration, etc all increase as time goes by. Many kids raised in rightwing evangelical churches leave once they can make their own decisions about religion and spirituality.

It would be a big mistake for the Democratic party to change its stance on key issues to accommodate a set of values that is actually appealing to fewer people over the long term.

  • Huh?

    [Read the article: Fetal labor]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"that Latino guy might be an illegal, I'm not 100% sure, but $200k is too much to risk, so I'm just going to hire the white guy, to be safe."

How many white guys are applying for the same jobs as the illegals? And those "white guys" may be illegals themselves.

  • Not likely

[Read the article: Democrats to "criminalize criticism of homosexual conduct"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"many of these threatened religious voters, while somewhat conservative...They could, with a bit of hand holding, be Democratic voters."

Sorry, but these folks will vote for who the preacher tells them to. They don't think independently or rationally, that is not how those churches work. Thoughtful, insightful christians usually do not belong to these churches.

  • Sorry to be a hater

[Read the article: Where the girls aren't: The Times Magazine's comedy issue]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"most unfunniest, most bitter women" "Other bitter females that come to are...Ann Coulter"

Ann Coulter is indeed bitter, but I don't think she qualifies as a comic (at least not intentionally).

  • Need to keep reminding swing voters

[Read the article: For 2008, a hypothetical Democratic victory]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"I can't picture myself voting for Republicans because we all know the debts they would have to pay to the religious right"

You're right, LeCastor. But MSM still believe McCain is a maverick and Guiliani is the Mayor of America. We have to make sure that they can't do the old bait & switch.

  • Looking for investors

[Read the article: Thompson eyes 2008; McCain makes it nearly official]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maybe Thompson is trolling for investors in his ethanol plant? Or does he have a new book to flog? A potential presidential campaign is a great way to generate interest in someone no one has heard from since 2004!

  • Who wants to harm Jimmy Carter?

[Read the article: "When I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Bush will definitely bring back that lifetime SS coverage before he and Prince Cheney leave office. There probably aren't alot of people gunning for Pres Carter or Clinton, but given the world of hurt Bu$hco will be leaving behind based on their crappy policies, he's going to need lots of protection.

  • Huh?

[Read the article: The words they said]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Le plus ca change ,le plus ce reste meme"

This is 'murka. We don't speak no furrin languages! If you want to speak Spanish, go to a third-world country like Miami!

  • Rope a dope!

[Read the article: Rush plays the sympathy card]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Instead of testifying before Congress without his cochlear implant, perhaps he could testify with his mouth taped shut!

  • Pass the tar baby!

[Read the article: Tony Snow on Iraq, or how "winning" is the same as "not winning"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's funny that when reporters use the Faux News tactic of demanding a yes/no answer to any question, Snow can't give them one.

  • I'm not a doctor, but...

[Read the article: Frist finds religion on his way out the Senate door]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have been to a physician before and therefore am qualified to diagnose ex-Sen Frist with "irrelevancy". This condition arises when you don't have a job, any influence and no one cares about what you have to say.

Don't let the door whack you on your ass/head on your way out!

  • Dems - don't get too far ahead on this

[Read the article: Johnson update: an "intracerebral bleed"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why is everyone worrying about the balance of power in the Senate? Unless Sen Johnson dies, he can continue to serve as a Senator. Numerous Senators have served while recovering from illnesses, or just old-age (Strom Thurmond). The individual Senator makes the decision to leave office, so Johnson can hang around as long as he wants.

  • Forget the drama, peeps

[Read the article: Johnson in critical condition after brain surgery]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Sen. Johnson can continue to serve his term in the Senate until death or HE chooses to resign. As noted by other posters, other Senators have continued to serve while recovering from strokes, heart attacks, major operations and senility (Strom Thurmond).

It's time to pay attention to real issues, not make believe stuff.

  • Even Hitler

[Read the article: Bush plan: Sleep well, send more troops?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    had insommnia! Bush is wacko!

  • Ebonius, thanks for the history

[Read the article: Bush plan: Sleep well, send more troops?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It only makes you wonder what people will be saying 50 years from now about the reign of George W. Bush.

  • Lower standards should benefit

[Read the article: Bush wants to expand the military]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Jenna and 'lil Barbara Bush. Now we just need 199,998 more troops.

  • A Glock

    [Read the article: Panic rooms]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    might be more effective.

  • Noryungi and Altaira99

[Read the article: Lifestyles of the the poor and unknown]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Good insight! Really made me think about this issue a little deeper. Thanks!

  • These people are cretins

[Read the article: What's in a name?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Maybe the GOPers should run a candidate named Jesus, except he's probably a Mexican or some other furriner.

  • Adopt locally

[Read the article: No adoption for you]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Well, maybe that means some of these parents-to-be will reconsider the thousands of American children stuck in foster care, available for adoption.

  • Nature or nurture

[Read the article: No adoption for you]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"A BMI of 40 puts the parent at obese, which means unhealthy eating habits and poor nutrition that they will pass on to the child (as we've shown with the alarming increase of juvenile diabetes)"

I think some discussion around the weight restrictions is a little confused. "Juvenile" diabetes is not caused by obesity, Type II diabetes (which used to be called adult onset) is often a result of obesity. The rates of children and teens with Type II has exploded and it a great concern.

However, genetic components are a factor in many diseases - is the concern here that "undesirable" people should be prevented from adopting Chinese babies, or are soo many people really confused about the impact of genetics versus environment.
