ridicule

You know who they didn't ridicule but should have? That guy who popularized lobotomies. PBS recently showed a documentary about the man referred to as "Dr. Lobotomy."

I forget his name but the documentary was more terrifying than any horror flick I've seen. And the evidence supporting use of the ice-pick lobotomy (google the term if you must) was nearly 100% anecdotal.

Saying someone should avoid transfats and refined sugar is harmless and will probably have good effects even if they are not the specific effects that Dr. Hyman claims.

Oh, and Dr. Hyman, there is nothing new under the sun. My Shaklee-shilling aunts have been parroting the same claims for the last forty years-- but ironically, they did suffer their share of inflammatory ailments over the years despite their preventative nutrition measures.

Some snake oil is poison, but it sounds like Dr. Hyman's money making scheme is benign at the very least.

@lifelike

Certain men, like certain women, may indeed be incapable of love.

But that isn't true of all men or all women.

Pregnant women were drinking martinis and smoking ciggies in the olden days.

I have no idea why a cougar/stud combo would produce a smarter child. But back in those days, people did pregnancy differently.

I keep my Republican friends

I tolerate their histrionic talking point emails when they come around because I care about them for reasons that have nothing to do with politics.

I do wonder about their reading comprehension skills and their ability to be manipulated by propoganda-- and they probably have the same musings about me.

I know by now which of these people are trying to bait me and debate me and which are the true believers. Usually, the men I can debate with until the debating gets tiresome, but the women for some reason I treat with kid gloves and do a "hmmm, you don't say... so seen any good movies lately?" I don't mean to stereotype but it seems the republican women I know are much more likely to take things personally if they feel their intelligence is being attacked.

When it gets to be too much, I just say, come on, you know I disagree with you about this lay off the ranting for a little bit and the conversation moves to more neutral ground.

There is an awful lot of propoganda these days. If it isn't state-sanctioned propoganda from the main-stream political parties and diffused via the corporately owned media, then it is alternative propoganda and/or conspiracy theories in ample abundance on the web. It is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking you are the only one clued into reality even when the media is only barely scratching the surface of the truth.

Of COURSE the Republicans are going to spend the next four years blaming Obama for the economy. They laid waste to our economy and had to take a hit in this election-- all they can hope for is that the depression gets worse over the next two to four years and they can blame Obama and retake the some of the Congressional seats lots and then in 2012 try for the Presidency again.

It should not seem at all surprising that Republicans are smearing and scapegoating Obama 24-7.

John Stewart's anger

My husband's elderly grandmother watches CNBC and Cramer religiously and she takes notes as she watches. She is retired and healthy and trying to safeguard the nest egg she inherited from her late husband so she can make it comfortably through her elder years.

At the end of the Daily Show interview, John Stewart made a reference to his 74 year old mother losing her nest egg-- same generation as my husband's grandmother.

I wondered if Stewart's mother also watched CNBC and Cramer religiously and took notes.

If you are able to view television with a critical eye for the difference between information and spin or p.r., is hard to understand why anyone would take Cramer to be anything other than an entertainer. But I do think some people do beleive that they are getting real, reliable information from him and I wonder if Stewart's mom was such a person.

It would really explain John Stewart's anger in that Cramer interview.

I don't think that Cramer could do anything but what he did. He is what he is. Buying stock on the basis of his advice is no different then paying a tarot card reader to give you some lottery numbers.

Original article: I'm planning my suicide

Changing your thoughts

Just want to add this-- when you hear the repetitive voice in your head that says" "I want to kill myself. I want to stop the pain. I want to die. I want to end this."

EDIT AND REVISE. You are still be telling the truth, but you are replacing destructive intentions with cathartic intentions.

"I want to CHANGE MY LIFE. I want to LIVE DIFFERENTLY THAN THIS. I want TO FEEL BETTER. I want to START ANEW."

This may just seem like self-affirmations but there is a truth in everything you are feeling, but there is a difference in how your mind is interpreting it and responding to it.

I personally do this to cope. I used to be very negative in my thinking but now I have a family to care for and suicide is not and will never be an option.

However, I know when I am hitting my wall and my limits for some difficult aspect of my life, I have to acknowledge the truth of that, but my choice of words makes ALL of the difference in what I am feeling next and whether I have the mental strength to try to implement a positive change or not.
