Bush and religion
[Read the article: Krauthammer's plan to deny Palestinians gas and electricity]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bush may or may not believe his religious professions, but he cynically follows them only when it is to his short-term political advantage. The rare examples of compassionate conservativism are to appeal to the religious right (stem cells, faith-based initiatives) or to business interests (immigration/guest workers, Medicare, AIDS drug patent protection) but almost never to the liberal Christian tradition(help for the poor, the sick, the oppressed, or the environment or mercy (Scooter Libby excepted?)). Don't get me started on the commandments of thou shalt not kill, or thou shalt not bear false witness.

Bush's beliefs
[Read the article: David Brooks' field trip to the White House]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bush may or may not believe he is doing God's work fighting evil, but the actual policies/decisions are determined by Cheney, who we can all agree, knows he is working on his own plans, not those of The AllMighty.

Debate winner
[Read the article: A few debate thoughts]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Excluding Clinton's last comment and its potential for an emotional response, Obama won hands down.
He improved his standing with several of Clinton's core groups and didn't lose any of his supporters.
On immigration and Cuba, Clinton maintained her credibility with Latinos, and Obama improved his.
With moderate to conservative or libertarian white men, Obama's resistance to a health care government mandate is a plus.
For voters who are concerned about experience and the commander-in-chief question, Obama made progress.
And among people who don't like negativity (women(?)) Obama is up and Clinton down.
Obama solidified his standing with his core groups including the anti-war crowd, and young people who think we need to change Washington. No change with African-Americans.
Add all these up and you can understand the poll trends.

News
[Read the article: Let 'em duke it out]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Shutting McCain out of the "News" is not good for the Democrats. McCain makes terrible appearances nationally. He may be OK in small groups or in comparison to the right-wing nut jobs but exposure and scrutiny of John McCain will be a real problem for the old, undisciplined, ill-informed defender of unpopular and whacky positions (war, budget, health care...). The Democratic candidate can much more effectly attack McCain than the other Democrat.

Republicans voting in Democratic primaries
[Read the article: Republicans key to Indiana primary?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Republicans will matter, but there is a difference between "Obamicans" and "dittoheads for Clinton," namely, honest support that will be there in the general election vs. dishonest votes that will disappear in November.
When the Clinton campaign makes noises about winning the popular vote, they need to subtract the dittoheads, maybe 200,000 so far.

negotiations with Clinton
[Read the article: What does Hillary want?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Times have changed and Obama is running as a different kind of candidate. There is nothing Clinton really wants short of the presidency, and she can't be trusted to hold up her end of any bargain. She can raise all the money she needs (and is rich anyway). There will be no substantive deal. Obama would look weak if he gave in to the conditions in the article, and Bill Richardson as VP will help him out the most in winning the election (in a landslide). If she hurts his chances in the general election she will pay a price, not just in legacy, but with a serious primary opponent in her next Senate election.

McCain's medical records
[Read the article: What's in John McCain's medical records?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Never mind the psychological mumbo-jumbo, I want to see his head CT for signs of cerebral atrophy. And in light of his appeal to values voters I wonder if he's been treated for any STD's.

Obama physicians
[Read the article: Uncle Charlie stories]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Physicians talk among themselves, and often about politics. The demographics are changing for the better, but there is stil a sizable number who with little prompting will spout nasty comments about Hillary Clinton, and then say they could vote for Obama. I don't argue. Logical or not, I'll take it.

Race and McCain
[Read the article: Race and the presidential race, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why is racial prejudice a problem only Obama has to address?
Why shouldn't McCain have to speak up and make it clear he doesn't want the votes of anyone based on racial fears, or of idiots who think Obama is a Muslim, or even the AntiChrist?
How can he get away without condemning and rejecting everyone (Mary Matalin...) who is involved with smears and innuendo? He should make it clear that they will have no influence on a McCain administration. Either you are with 'em or against 'em.

AC in AZ
[Read the article: Does air conditioning make people vote Republican?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Arizona would be intolerable without AC. With climate change projections suggesting a summer temperature increase of 5 degrees and melting snowpack, combined with high gas prices for commuting the inmigration may reverse, and the housing bubble may implode taking the whole economy with it.

New demographic
[Read the article: How many homes do you have?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Would you vote to put someone in charge of the U.S. government who doesn't know how many houses he owns?
New demographic swinging to Obama: Voters who know how many houses they own.
