Just what does the AVERAGE time have to do with the LEFT HAND SKEW of elite runners? Unless the elite runners are stuck behind the masses (and I'm pretty sure the faster runners get to start first), there's absolutely no way the democratization of running has resulted in what the author implies.
"In the years that followed, elderly men lined up for Viagra prescriptions without first consulting their wives..."
The old "men are oversexed pigs whilst women only tolerate sex when they have to" stereotype is a little Victorian. Who's to say that there aren't a lot of women out there who are *thrilled* to get some penetrative action again? Sure, sex is not all about erections and penetrations, but it's a potent (haha!) symbol of a male partner's attraction. I can see the death of erections as being very difficult on the other partner's sense of attractiveness.
The cover reminds me of a fairy tale in which a girl is engaged to a cannibal... actually a common theme. These tales weren't misogynist, but rather reflected fear of strangers and a warning to parents about carefully screening their daughters' suitors before marrying them off.
