Original article: Name that creepfest

My eyes!!!

My first thought was some kind of Scientology commercial... this was close enough.

Original article: I Like to Watch

Here come the letters...

I'm not going to yell at you for not liking Doctor Who, although I'd watch episodes 6 and 8-10 before making official judgement, because overall the opinion of the American public doesn't matter one whit in regards to the fate of the show.

Remember the SciFi Channel's killing blow to Farscape? They had a controlling interest in the show, and decided to pull the funding. We lost our show, and the fact that we got the wonderful BSG in return doesn't quite make up for it. This time, SciFi's just a broadcaster. And that's how I like it.

The show is a massive success in the UK and all over the world. Everyone would like an upswelling of American attention, but we're an insignificant portion of Who fandom. Those of us who are fans of the show in the States... well we get what's going on in those first few episodes and that's all that matters.

I'm happy, because I'm an original Who fanboy and I'm getting excatly what I wanted from the show. That's enough.

Original article: "Idol" slayer?

Missing the Point

A vote for or against Sanjaya will not take down the Idol franchise, but it is still a deeply satisfying move for fans and anti-fans of the show. As a fan who watched my favorites be pushed aside year after year in favor of those contestants with better stories (aka the Sabrina Sloan effect), the fact that there's such a groundswell to buck the system is very gratifying.

Yes, I voted for Sanjaya. Actually, I take that back. I used the Dial Idol software to vote for Sanjaya for me, as well as support other contestants that I felt deserved my vote that week. Or in the case of this week, I voted against Haley.

It's not subversive, but it's damn fun. People are thinking about the phenomenon way too much.

Original article: Why the iPhone matters

My stock iPhone comment

I like buttons on my phone. Everything that you say about the iPhone may be true, but if I'm buying a phone then I want buttons instead of a touchscreen.

And I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Why the low storage?

My only regret was my last iPod dying last month so I replaced it before the upgrade. I don't need 80GB, but I'll take it for the same price.

What do we think will be the length of time we'll have to wait before we get an iPod Touch with some decent storage? 16GB doesn't cut it for me, I've got too much music that I want to take with me.

Original article: And the Buffy goes to ...

But it's about football...

I accept that it's an excellent drama, but I can't get around that it's about high school football. Just like people won't watch BSG because it's a SciFi show, I won't watch FNL. I wish it the best of luck.

TBS?????

How can they have any of the major playoffs on a station that doesn't have a strong nationwide HD channel? What is this, the 80s?

(Yes, I know that DirecTV has TBS HD but my building hasn't upgraded their infrastructure yet. Dammit.)

Ha!

Love the workaround on the two-sentence rule. And yes, that's the game I'll be watching on Sunday.

Original article: The marathon that wasn't

When will the heads roll?

I just started training for next year's Chicago Marathon. I figured that if I work towards it slowly then I'll easily be in good shape. What happened this year is deplorable, and there needs to be some serious adjustments. I doubt that anything will happen, but I await some good news.

And to the anonymous coward who tried to make this a "healthy" guilt trip, own up and identify yourself. Running a Marathon is a major undertaking, and a significant commitment, and something that doesn't require the ability to run to participate in. The time and effort spent to prepare the body to run a marathon and the accomplishment of completing it is something to be cherished.

I'd be okay with getting a Mac but...

...I like my computer to be a gaming rig, and Macs and games don't mix. I know this is becoming less and less true but until the conventional wisdom changes I'll be standing by that statement. If the market share improves and all of the games that I want to play will be simultaneously released for the Mac, I'll consider switching.

...I'm a power user. When I want a new computer, I want it to be built to my exact specification. I can build my own PC planning ahead for future upgrades, and when it gets older I can throw Linux on it and continue its usefulness. If I can tinker, upgrade, and convert a Mac like I can with other systems, I'll consider switching.

...I get sick of the Mac faithful. I'm not a hater on their systems, there's plenty of good reasons to get a Mac, but I have plenty of legitimate reasons why I stay in PC-land. If I try to reach across the chasm in friendship and I'm rebuffed, I'll think twice about switching. Bite me, PC vs. Mac commercials.

...I have nightmares of the old early-90s default Mac Font. It's not their fault, it just bugs me.

...I'm not paying for one just now. I can't afford another computer. Someone want to give a recent model to me for free?

Congrats on the increase in market share, Apple. At the rate you're going, I'll consider buying a Mac in 5-6 years time. And I never thought I'd say that.
