Brilliant Marketing ploy!
[Read the article: The full, final "Harry Potter" -- leaked online!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Rowling generates more "buzz", websites and TV that wouldn't normally cover something like a book release are given half an excuse to run yet another Harry Potter free promo! To top it all off, the "leak" is barely legible and would cause anyone who attempts to read it to throw up their hands up in disgust and just go buy the damn thing!
This won't depress sales. This will help sales. Congrats, all of you helped Rowling get a lttle bit richer!

Of course Bonds' is getting singled out!
[Read the article: When Barry passes Hank]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]He's about to break the career homerun record, the most famous of all American sporting records, for god's sake (Mom, apple pie and 755)! The record has stood for 30+ years! The fact that both Bonds and Aaron didn't pass the record until passing the big 4-0 is a testament to how unassailable the HR record is. It's a big deal and the fact that a known cheater is about to surpass Aaron's accomplishment might cause a tad bit of scrutiny, don't you think?
The fact that Aaron broke Ruth's record while enduring the well-documented harassment at the hands of a ever-shrinking group of bigoted idiots (although there were still a lot left in the 70s) is the epitome of what it means to be a hero in America today.
Barry Bonds is the antithesis of a hero. And his skin color has nothing to do with it.

Legalize It!
[Read the article: Anti-prostitution pledge required for AIDS funding?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Its the only way to stop the death, disease and incarceration associated with illegal prostitution. Just like abortion...
-
You'd think Repugs would be for it...
[Read the article: Anti-prostitution pledge required for AIDS funding?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After all, no illegal prostitution, no "sting" operation, no Repugs get "outed" as the adulterous bastards that they are. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

No stars upon thars!
[Read the article: The great circumcision debate, continued]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm circumcised, my son is circumcised, and I don't feel the slightest bit guilty/oppressed about it. I'd do it again in a second. I also cut his hair, trim his nails and other various things which make it easier to keep him clean and germ free.
Also, I don't feel I'm superior to uncut men or that I'm somehow "mutilated" or missing out on some mind-blowing sexual pleasure. Or that I've somehow "ruined" my son for all that future sex he's going to have. And I often make decisions on his behalf without consulting his opinion first. He's 2-years-old and I'm his father, so I'd say that's pretty normal as well.
So just let it be, anonymous'. Seriously. And that goes for you too, "Broadsheet"!

The next Buckner?
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What, Gagne's going to play first? I know the Bo Sox pen is loaded but that seems like a tremendous waste of talent to play him in the infield. Maybe right field..
Seriously, though. With the return of Jon Lester and Schilling, Okajima eating up innings and Papelbon only blowing 4 saves all year, Gagne might have to get use to only pitching every 3rd game. Does wonders for the noodle arm. I'm thinking that this move also doubles as a contingency plan for Schillings eventual departure in the offseason (with either Okajima, Tavarez or possibly Papelbon taking over the 5th spot). Even the Red Sox aren't stupid enough to get into a bidding war for a 42-year-old pitcher, no matter how much the RSN digs him!
As to the Braves brillance, Texiera (sp?) might make a difference this year but with the Jones' in the afternoon of their careers (one late, one early) and a pitching staff that looks closer to retirement than a WS ring, I wouldn't start planning the parade just yet. They've had a pretty good team forever and '95 was the only year they managed to pull it together...
I'll take that bet on the 2009 Texans any day. They're gonna have that Bush-stink on them for along time...

Creepy...
[Read the article: How an undercover NBC reporter was outed by hackers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I can't decide which is creepier: that a major network decided this was somehow newsworthy enough to "sting" with a hidden camera or the shot of a herd of geeks chasing after a cute, blonde girl making "To Catch a Predator" references..
Maybe next time the network will be smart enough to at least send someone who would actually blend in!

All teenagers are, as LC puts it, "superficial" and lack "innate curiousity".
[Read the article: Math doesn't suck, it buys you Gucci]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's why an approach like the one in Danica's book should be embraced, not heaped upon with scorn.
Teenagers are weird creatures: half child, half adult, just trying to be accepted, assaulted by hormones and inexplicable body changes that happen too fast or too slow... The pretty ones trying to be taken seriously. The serious ones just trying to have a social life. Not one of them, no matter their "station" (i.e., geek, jock, princess) are happy with where they are. Bravo to teachers like "farnsworth" who are doing the grunt work on this one (A math rap? Wow! How much behind-the-back crap do you get for that?)!
If we wait until they were sufficiently non-materialistic and superficial (as I'm sure Linear Chaos was when he was 13) they're already too far behind and well on their way to that Communications degree. And, LC, I have to disagree that video games are the way to reach most 13-year-old girls. Just trust me when I say it isn't.
"Perhaps it is not the the girls that need to realize that math is "cool", but their families and society as a whole for that matter." Easier said than done, my friend, and certainly not in time to compete with the Chinese or Indians. Best to work with what you've got presently.

Yep!
[Read the article: Million-dollar babies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Rich people are often pompous, oblivious idiots. Don't worry, their kids will "rebel" by killing themselves with drugs, becoming whores, or both.
So what's the news here?

I blame...
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...MTV! That's right! Without this evil cable channel reducing the attention spans of future sports fans country-wide, those of us who comprise the marketing goal of current advertising trends wouldn't need constant homeruns to hold our attention (I, for one, will immediately turn off any baseball game where no HR has occurred by the 3rd inning).
Curse you, Viacom, and all of your corporate holdings!!
