  • What's wrong with the NL?

When the Series starts next year, it will be almost 3 years since the National League has won a World Series GAME!

Maybe they need a DH. Maybe they should stop making pitchers, one of the most specialized positions in sports, bat. I don't have the answers; I'm an American League guy.

    Anyone?

  • L.A. to get team...

Everyone shrugs. How about that Kobe Bryant?

Not to be a picker of nits, but as a former Angelino, I'm pretty sure its spelled with an "i".

Also, Pasadena will NEVER allow a pro football team to occupy their stadium. That geriatric town likes them their quiet, and the current slate of games is all they can handle as is.

  • Easiest schedule for a winning team + no substantive injuries =

    Undefeated season!

That seems to me the part of the analysis that King is missing. Last night Rothlisberger was fresh off of surgery 5 weeks (?) ago. Willie Parker, the surprise RB stud of the year was playing his first game in weeks. The Colts have had no substantive injuries this year! None!

And talk about a cakewalk season. If you ask me, this schedule was meant to serve up another Colts AFC Championship season by the league, while ensuring that they'll play in that godforsaken dome-thing all the way through the playoffs. They have beaten such juggernauts as the Browns, the 49ers, and the Cardinals! Sure, you could make a case for the Ravens, Pats or Rams being elite teams but, hindsight being 20/20 and all, its not looking like it this year. Add to this the fact that they get to play the woeful Texans and Titans twice a year AND they're toughest division rival is the Jags who start a virtual parapalegic as an RB (and now are w/o their starting QB) --- How can they NOT go undefeated?

King is right in that 2 of their toughest matchups, SD and Seattle are still to come, but c'mon. When we speak of elite teams this year SD is on the periphery and Seattle... well we've already discussed the general woefullness of the NFC enough.

  • Only 20 more days until King is back...

    It's my current mantra.

Nothing against Ms. Paglia – I generally enjoy her writing otherwise – but this article is nothing more than a historical rehash of what every fan of the NFL has known about (thanks ESPN, for the blatant inundation – they do love they're handwringing, don't they?) and been consistantly reminded of on a weekly basis this season. Add in a few personal touches about beer cozies and viola, fill in article for King – with absolutely nothing of substance for us King fans.

I couldn't even pretend to get excited about Paglia's supposed opening of the "racist" pandora's box by Owens. Please. This is the town that infamously booed Santa and you're trying to convince me that race has never been an issue? Ever? Until T.O.? Please.

Thank God for the inevitable implosion of this team – due to injury and the general inability of Andy Reid to coach well – so now we can watch the Colts and they're soon-to-be record breaking season in peace. Now that's a team worth writing columns about!!! Too bad none of them seems to be an asshole...

  • More, Less, or "on Par" with a punter?

That's the question for the day, isn't it?

I'd like to speak in defense of the poster who compared WRs "on par" to punters and the rather mean and dismissive attitude about his perceived football knowledge. Although probably engaging in hyperbole to make point, there is an inherent truth to what he said about the WR position in general. Obviously Owens is a bit more than an average WR, but lets just engage the arguement on the basis of how the average football play operates and each positions' average importance on completion of said play (or in the case of Defense, stoppeage of the opponents play). Remember: about 46% of offensive plays in the NFL are running plays that a receiver would have little or nothing to do with (short of acting as a decoy for about 2 seconds or blocking for the runner – if the runner gets that far) and most passing plays involve at least 2 other receivers and, in some cases, the RB as a legal receiving option as well.

More important than a WR category (in no particular order of importance - THAT would be a LONG debate):

Quarterback, Half Back (Running Back), Fullback, the entire Offensive line (tackles, guards and center), the entire Defensive line (for the sake of argument lets just say this includes the Linebackers as well as Ends, Tackles, and Nose Guard)

Even importantance with a WR category Tight Ends, all defensive backs, Placekicker, Holder, Returner

Less important than a WR category all other special teams players (including Punter, Long Snapper, and all those other dudes running around like crazy)

Anybody disagree? I'd love to read your arguement...

  • Yep... Another dream job ruined by reality

    Story of my life...

You're discovering what visual artists who enter the world of advertising have had to learn many a time over in the last 100 years: Selling out hurts - at least after a while.

I'll also wager you'd probably do it again if given the opportunity. Jobs can be "soul-sucking" because they're too "hip" and hectic. They can be as equally "soul-sucking" if they're unchallenging and boring. At least you got the former.

That's why I'm still with Madison Ave. I'd at least like to be entertained while my professional psyche is devoured!
