this is the hill you're willing to die on?

[Read more letters about this article: Here]So, if I read the majority of writers correctly, you are willing to have McCain (the Bush clone) elected because you are going to stand on your laurels and show the American public how non-patriotic you are (seeing as how patriotism is, so, not the thing to be). That's right. Don't wear your American pin, because it's stupid patriotism. Don't say the Pledge of Allegiance, because it's stupid patriotism. And once McCain's president, you can all stand on the corner and shout about how you are not a patriot. Or write to Salon, and denounce stupid patriotism (and when McCain continues Bush's legacy, the telecommunications companies can record everything you say, so they will know you are not a stupid patriot). Ann 1960 simply said that to play the game, you have to play the game correctly. Do you really think Joe American will vote for someone who does not wear an American pin? At a job interview, you wear the "man's" suit. At Thanksgiving dinner, a polite athiest should keep his/her mouth shut when someone says grace. It's the right thing to do. If you want to save this country, shut up, wear the pin, say the Pledge and then work on solving the problems. Or suffer the consequences of another 4-8 years of Bush, war, suffering and political disaster.

theory vs. reality

[Read more letters about this article: Here]I get that many Salon writers are erudite, educated people who want a rational American public to elect someone based on rational, logical arguments. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Many Americans are (bless their little hearts) completely non-rational when it comes to electing their President. What I (and a very few others) say is this: you can wish all you want for people to elect Obama based on his logical arguements, BUT THEY WILL NOT! One of my relatives, a completely sane, educated, Democratically-minded voter, will not vote for Obama. Why??? Because she's convinced he'll let Muslims into the country and they will overtake us!! Unfortunately, MILLIONS of Americans feel like her. So, here's the crossroads: Obama, to get their votes, MUST convince people that he IS a patriotic American (I have no doubt that he is), OR, he can talk all the logic he wants, and McCain will be the next President. Period, end of statement. It's times like this when theory needs to be tempered by reality, and all the philosophical BS in the world doesn't amount to a hill of beans, especially when that's all we'll be eating when McCain is elected.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]To compare stoning women, or sending girl children back into a burning building (to burn to death, ugh) because they are not wearing veils to the Pope's position on childbirth is ridiculous to the extreme. Why? Because in this country (the WORST POSSIBLE COUNTRY to many of you!), women are free to IGNORE the Pope!! What happens in many fundamentalist countries to women who ignore religious rules?? They get stoned to death!!! It's fine to disagree with portions of the U.S. (particularly policies), but to maintain that the U.S. is no better, nay, even worse!, than many third world countries is beyond belief. I'm no knee-jerk idealogue, but I know how it is in other countries, where you can be killed for merely speaking your mind. Me, I'd rather live in the good ol' U.S.A. (remember, you can always catch a plane to any country in the world!)
