Why must you insist on telling us the entire plot in your review? That's just bad taste, and not really a review at all.
Does anyone else see the irony here, in the fact that we are judging her for judging herself? I know she is a public figure, and she opened herself up to being judged by talking about her weight. However, maybe we should not further the spiral of judgment when we ourselves are mostly all guilty of judging ourselves harshly as well.
I can appreciate what you are saying, but I am not sure you have convinced me I should not boycott the movie. Just because Stiller's use of the word "retard" is "deliberate, not casual" doesn't make it justified. If fact, wouldn't you say that doing something offensive deliberately, makes you even more of a jackass?
The irony in that the actors are making fun of actor's self indulgence and egotism isn't as interesting as you make it out to be. If fact, I would argue that making fun of themselves is in a way even more self serving than what they are making fun of. I would even go so far as to call it ordinary.
By the way, Tom Cruise is what MADE Top Gun, even if he wasn't really "acting" in the movie.
Neverending Story (the first one of course), and
The Dark Crystal... Both great films.
Maybe the next few are a bit too mainstream, but great nonetheless: Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead, and The Goonies.
You have finally put into words what I have been thinking, feeling and trying to put into words. Now I am better equipped to have a dialogue about this with my "progressive" male friends who sneer anytime the word Clinton is murmured. Thank you so much.
