The subtle difference...

I haven't read 'The Game', but I'm pretty sure what Catherine Price is hysterically referring to as "psychological manipulation" is commonly known as 'flirting'.

What is being described as 'insulting a woman to lower her self-esteem' is, in reality, called 'teasing'.

The subtle difference is: are you making her laugh, or are you actually insulting her? Granted, the latter may actually work on a minority of women, but the former works with almost ALL women.

*Every* single guy I know that is successful with women uses the 'tease her whenever possible in a way that makes her laugh' routine, whether they're conscious of it or not.

If I hear this theory one more time...

The idea that gender is nothing but a social construct is simply idiotic. I don't understand how a theory that seems to have no evidence, with a mountain of evidence disproving it, gets taught in higher education. I've never taken Women's Studies, but isn't this theory what is taught?

Sure, girls are encouraged by society to play with dolls and look pretty, etc at a young age but it doesnt follow that gender is NOTHING BUT a social construct.

How are these people not challenged?

ARGH!...a small point

Rap is a vocal style. Hip-hop is a musical style.

So saying "bitch, as used in rap and hip-hop" is redundant.

I just point it out because many people think rap means 'old school' and hip-hop means 'current'. IT DOESN'T.

OMG!

OMG, A woman had 17 kids, like in the old days!

A ha ha ha!! Let's all laugh at her! What a stupid hick! A ha ha!! We're so much smarter then that!

A ha ha, fuck her and her large, happy family!!

The overpopulating myth

But then again, with an overpopulated planet, I just don't see the reason for having 17 children and still saying you want more.

WHO is perpetuating this myth of white, american middle class families 'overpopulating' the planet? The fertility rate of white North Americans, Europeans and Japanese are very low, sometimes below replacement level.

Enjoy it while you can

Maybe next time Camille can elucidate exactly WHY the great directors and musicians since her college days don't amount to anything.

I'm not just being snarky, it would be genuinely interesting to hear her reasoning.

Exactly why are Joy Division, Aphex Twin, Ladytron not even worth a blip on the Boomer cultural radar yet the rebirth of popular music is .... a return to the Blues and ... Kelly Clarkson?!

No, seriously, please explain.

Sorry...

...but the Perfect 10 guy is right. Farhad's dismissals of his claims are logically ridiculous.

Good point

Just how many black staff does Salon employ? I haven't noticed any.

Also, are there ANY actual black people that prefer being called "African-American"? Becuase I've never heard of any. I've only ever heard a few complain the term "African-American" is stupid.

It's the Middle East's fault

As the global market for films becomes more important then the domestic market, we will continue to see relentless pandering and dumbed-down films released for the more uneducated and simple populations of eastern countries.

Shadow, please...

Shadow - they couldn't play their instruments very well..?

What they did to compensate was focus on songwriting, arrangement and production, which makes for infinately better music then flash, technical, notes-per-minute playing that is ultimately soulless. Which makes them BETTER musicians then the self-indulgent hippy crap of that era.

Let's see - Nirvana, Radiohead, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus many, many other bands have cited them as a main influence.

re: the Durutti Column

Totally agree.

Another fantastic Manchester artist that is totally overlooked.

John Frusciante, the guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers, has called Durutti Column a.k.a. Vini Reilly the greatest guitarist in the world.

Original article: "It's Britney, bitch"

Britney deserves no sympathy

All the vitriol aimed at Britney is perfectly justified.

We have been force-fed her truly abysmal music for almost ten years now. It's inescapable, aural torture.

If she doesn't like all the public criticism, all she has to do is retire with her millions and just go away. But she and the media keep pushing her on us.

People should be getting angry. We have a responsibility to get angry and push back against her brand of relentless mediocrity and all she represents.

Fuck her.

dataguyx...I disagree

Yes, online poker sites can, in theory, mess with the odds. With the arsenal of poker tracking software and online poker forums, word of statistically impossible patterns that suggest tampering would spread like wild and accounts would be taken elsewhere in droves. It would be business suicide.

Collusion is possible, but very rare from my experience. It's not easy to pull off and if found out, the poker sites will sieze all your money.

I've made an ROI of 200% playing online poker and don't feel any insecurity about where my money is.

Poker falls under the gambling category, but it is first and foremost a game of skill. 'A few minutes to learn and a lifetime to master'.

Far more immoral in my mind are lotteries - the government promoting an easy quick financial fix to the poor and uneducated, the solution to all life's problems, when they know full well the odds are impossible.

Teensy nails it

Teensy's second post nails why I find fat apologists so absurd - male, female, black, white, whatever. Of course, they should be treated with the same respect as any other human but encouraging the denial that there's a problem is just harmful for everyone. I don't see why the logic of this is such an affront to obese people.

An earlier poster also had a good point about probable flaws in the interpretation of this study. Thin, white women are the most attractive so they disproportionately get the most income, making the obese white women seem relatively shafted.
