She's a teenager, questioning and exploring. Telling her that she might have had two more siblings had her dad and mom not chosen to terminate the pregnancies won't do her any good. What good would telling her do? Considering abortion as birth control? Better to be more responsible with better methods.
I'm sorry to see that The Fix isn't continuing. I know it's been rethought and reconfigured a few times. Perhaps now it's a question of staffing, that at this time Salon can't hire a new person to take charge of this. What might justify a salary would be someone to compile and comment, so we Salon readers would be kept aware of what in the areas of pop culture that we don't follow closely we should be aware of. The compilations would be linking to stories elsewhere. The commentary would tell why we should (or shoudln't) care. Perhaps the compiler's duties could be expanded--I'd love to see some linking to religion stories, for example (I use the Pew Forum's roundup for that), and even plumbing Salon's archives for best-of and worth rereading could be in the job description. I'd send my resume for such a job, if I could work it around my grad-school schedule.
Wasn't this the "Survivor" that began with racially segregated tribes? I was interested to see that the final three were African-American, and the fourth was Asian-American. Nothing was said about that during the reunion show--which was actually refreshing in it not being a factor for discussion. Yau-Man is in line for the audience award in the next all-star edition, like Rupert fomr Panama Islands earning a delayed award for winning in a way other than end-game deception.
Thanks for the correction. If I'd watched the last two seasons, I might have known the answer. Did I get enough of the "Survivor" flavor watching only the final night?
Interesting that this position is subject to Senate confirmation. How many senators will be asking about redeployment/withdrawal strategy for Iraq? And how much attention will be given to Afghanistan? I'd look for this to end up being another of Bush's interim appointments to bypass Congress.
"What we have said is that we will make available to the committees individuals who are perfectly willing to answer any and all questions." But they won't make available individuals who aren't perfectly willing to answer any and all questions.
Would it be ducking to say "He'll break the record long before the election"? I don't like the concept that a visit to the White House is now an expected step for any sports championship or individual record. "I'd go to a game and shake his hand" would be a good response. At a political debate, that's a throwaway question and deserves a throwaway answer.
Thanks for trying again to cover TV and make some recommendations. One request: will you please include broadcast television recommendations daily? That includes PBS. I don't have cable/satellite/digital TV, and don't want to read a guide that won't include shows available on the broadcast spectrum.
Nothing on the on-air channels worth seeing today? I wish you'd include broadcast recommendations daily. Some of us don't have cable or satellite.
The contradiction in Clinton's plan, along with most others this cycle, is that all Americans will be required to purchase health insurance. If health care is viewed here as a fundamental right, why pay for it? That's why so-called socialized medicine is what we should end up with. Yes, as in some other countries, individuals could pay for private care, but it would have to be funneled through free basic levels of care.
Another question for the letter writer to ask is why continue in that college. Yes, finishing the degree is an important motivation, but by graduating from a school that has a reputation for a certain faith, carrying an implied endorsement of the student as a believer with a particular theology, will that follow the writer through a career?
I don't think the writer has any responsibility to come out as an atheist, but transferring (again) to a more amenable school is a big step in feeling more comfortable with one's own spiritual orientation. And I encourage continuing with freethinking and examining beliefs. There might be a time when it feels right to reveal atheism to others, and eventually to parents--it can take time, though.
And if there is some non-theistic religion and spirituality in your belief system, explore liberal religions such as Unitarian Universalism.
Anything above a nanosecond is "not one nanosecond." Therefore, Edwards could be spending hours every day obsessing over his fellow candidates and be truthful in that apparent "I'm not concerned" statement.
Richardson had many obstacles. Is it telling that last night C-SPAN's caption was "Bill Richardson, D-Mexico"?
Perennial candidate who becomes laughingstock...
Did Ann Coulter slip in a parenthetical dig about Hillary's sexuality? "(I also predict more Oval Office incidents with female interns.)" It's not Bill who will be in the Oval Office.
The most interesting sentence from McCain's appeal: "John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity." Is that saying that while he was serving our country in the military he didn't have honor and integrity, or is this describing a 24-year period other than 1984-2008?
Good for his endorsement. That's one step to being running mate, which could be a strong ticket.
Sounds a lot like Whitewater, not a home purchase tied to the same-day sale (not to Obama) of the corner lot next to it. I'm thinking Obama should go ahead and purchase that corner lot, too, for security reasons.
A certain president did his best not to be one of those standing in the military in Alabama.
I noted that Bush said we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and drilling in Alaska would do that. But I was thinking that it wouldn't reduce our dependence on oil, and shouldn't that be the goal?
