To answer your question, the only situation in which this would be making it "easier" for a false accusation, would involve a woman who wanted to be vindictive should the events following the consensual sex not meet her expectations. She wanted him to call back, he didn't; their relationship didn't progress to where she wanted it; they were dating and the relationship ended badly...something along those lines. She could now make a false claim, with solid physical evidence, weeks, months or years after the act. I believe a previous poster touched on this.

While I'd like to hope that the criminal justice system works well enough to weed out cases such as this and not result in convictions, this doesn't mitigate the stigma that a false rape accusation has. I also genuinely believe that the vast majority of people know better than to behave in this sort of fashion. It's just disquieting when you read that false rape claims could be anywhere from 20% - 40% of reported cases. For every study there's a conflicting one, so I have no idea what numbers to trust.

Something has to be done to empower victims of rape to come forward. If the 41% statistic is accurate, it's horrific and needs to get to 100%. At the same time, we need a system that is not easily abused.

I don't pretend to have the answer.

    To RDeanna and cpollard

I believe, if you read my post again, you'll see that I put the word easier in quotes, and went on to explain how women could take advantage of and the kits. I later said that I believed that the vast majority of of people know better than to behave this way. Never did I suggest that there were tons of women who would do this.

I also composed my post while emilyjeanne was posting her incredibly insightful and informative post, at least it was to me. I even went so far as to thank her for said post. Had we not been posting simultaneously, I would have assimilated her thoughts into my post and hopefully the end result would have been verbiage that would have been more difficult to misinterpret and run with.

Put my comments in their proper context and you'll see that I never even began to suggest any of the things you've accused me of.

  • I'm most likely missing the point

Yeah, but what else is new?

But is this really a pressing and important feminist issue? If this next wave of feminism wants to grow legs and make progress, is this really where you want to be telling presumably intelligent and thoughtful feminists to direct their ire?

The goal should be to shatter the glass ceiling, not reinforce it.

    Just saying.

  • Time out

    Blogging had a path?

But seriously, there was a time in this country when feminists were considered cool. Well, maybe not cool, but feminists did things, like organize and mobilize for equal rights and reproductive freedom, and they even succeeded in some of their goals. And there was a time in this country, a long time ago, when a feminism wasn't just for women. And neither was writing. People wrote articles, and opinion pieces of substance, on topics they took the time to research. Words designed to educate and inspire (not titillate) us about real issues, so you knew who's anger it was, and why she was so upset, and I believe that time can come again.

  • Now I'm really confused

Misogyny and racism are real, more widespread than some people are comfortable admitting, and have been around for centuries. Neither Obama nor Clinton's candidacies exposed either. They certainly forced people to confront and discuss these uncomfortable realities, and for those reasons I'm grateful that both ran. Going forward, not only do we need to unify to avoid four more years of republican rule, we also need to elevate the discourse above retroactive whining, bitterness, and spiteful rejections of a candidate who, from a policy standpoint, is almost identical to your preferred candidate.....no matter who ultimately wins the nomination.

It's obvious that some people here understand the important and recurring role sex should play in marriages, while some do not. Kudos to the posters who've pointed out that sex is supposed to be fun for both parties involved. The shocker is that this may be news to some on this thread.

As for the folks that are too squeamish to engage in otherwise vanilla sex acts, withhold sex from their partners, and/or are too insecure to have honest discussions with their partners about their sexual needs.....my advice is to change your ways.

But you gotta love the hypocrisy that allows a letter that Greeneyedkzin accurately described as "racist, sexist and anti-Semitic" to remain posted for hours, while otherwise humorous, certainly less offensive posts are routinely censored and taken down moments after going up.

Of course, this kinda segues nicely into the fact that recent posts on Broadsheet have dealt with studies and findings that, and you really don't need to look too hard, suggest innate differences between the sexes that extend beyond anatomy.

    Art imitating life imitating farce.....

    ....I think.

Oppressed women the world over are not only thrilled that you've skewered this ABC piece, but also that you called out ABC for their absurd headline.

Props to those who already tied in the criticism of GTA.

The LW certainly has a problem....of course, the important step is recognizing that it isn't the sound of the neighbor playing ball.
