  • I'll Miss Him

    [Read the article: Crocodile tears]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

While Steve Irwin did have an over the top personality, which I can understand might grate on some people, I'm going to miss him. He has done more to promote awareness about animal conservation than anyone I can think of during the last 20 years - and he did it by appealing not only to kids, but also to adults. He was enthusiastic, and apparently, personable and very approachable.

In his "Croc Diaries" show, which focused more on the Australia Zoo and the civilization/wildlife conflicts that happen in Australia you got a real sense of someone that cared about wildlife and who wanted both to share his love with others, and help them understand that even scary dangerous animals were beautiful and worth saving. His work saving crocodiles and venomous snakes that wandered into settled areas saved many animals that would otherwise have been destroyed.

I think a lot of people confuse interacting with an animal with harming an animal. I never saw him harm an animal - unless you consider the amount of bumping and jostling that you might expect boarding a subway train to be harm. Lawnmowers on the other hand...those were harmed in the making of at least one show.

I'm going to miss him, and I am going to miss having a window into the work that he was doing. I'm also very sorry for his family's loss. He was a remarkable man.

  • And the answer is...

[Read the article: Guantánamo, or can Bush make the pivot?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"the rights owed to some nameless and not-particularly-scary detainees to the rights owed to one of the alleged masterminds of 9/11"

And the answer is, we give the the same rights we would give a guy that held up a liquor store.

Our system of justice either works, or it doesn't. We should not be "special casing" how we try particular criminals (unless we want to call them war criminals and send them to the Hague...). What's next, special methods of trying drug offenders, or maybe...journalists?

  • Not Tears..

    [Read the article: The Fix]

"Tom seems to be forcing back the tears himself."

Ugh - I feel like I'm choking a little something back myself. When do the sheperds (or UFOs) show up?

  • Link to Profile?

    [Read the article: Time mistake]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would really, really like it if the entiries that point to YouTube had a link to the creators profile (make it open in another windows, that keeps them on your site too).

  • A New Front In the War On Terror?

[Read the article: Birth control for everyone!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm sure that the White House is watching. No doubt there will soon be an announcement that Chile is on the list of countries that support terror, and by terror, I mean reproductive rights. Expect to see sanctions brought up within the security council within the next month. We have to act now, before the rising threat of female empowerment has a chance to turn into a mushroom cloud.

  • re: I'm Not Paying For it

[Read the article: Birth control for everyone!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I pay enough taxes that I'm pretty sure that we can cover both oral contraceptives and condoms. I think that the cost of passing those out free to all takers will more than offset the current real costs that are incurred by policies that are basically designed to encourage unplanned pregnancies. I would much rather see teenagers finishing high school, going on to college and contributing to the economy...I think it's a pretty good investment.

If you want to be a beancounter about it, it seems pretty obvious that cost of welfare and social programs for unplanned,"preventable" parentnhood has to be a lot higher than the cost of providing birth control.

And I have never begrudged anyone having all the sex they want - I'm pretty sure that on my deathbed I'm not going to wish I had less.

  • Secretarial Pool

    [Read the article: Madame Secretary-General?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Since she can't be president until Ahnold gets the constitution changed, what about Madeline Albright? I would love to see that happen.

It won't; but I would love to see that happen.

  • Sigh...

[Read the article: Congressman resigns over e-mails, explicit IM content]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I really, really wish that I was surprised by this. It's sad that I have become so used to this kind of double-dealing hypocrisy that it barely even registers.

  • "Capitol Police have no record of any such incident involving Foley"

[Read the article: From Foleygate, signs of things to come?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Begs the question - who do they have records of such incidents involving?

  • Fascinating...

[Read the article: The price of war]

After fooling around with the sliders I discovered something very interesting. According to the model, Iraqi lives have no value. Increase the number of Iraqi deaths, no figures change and it doesn't cost anybody anything.

Why does this not surprise me?

  • Classic Blunder

[Read the article: White House: Kerry insulted the troops. Kerry: No, I insulted Bush]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Hm...when I saw it it seemed like it was a pretty obvious case of ""never get involved in a land war in Asia"", not a reference to actually serving in the military.

  • Gosh...

    [Read the article: Fed up]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It must be great to be so completely clueless. I frequently worry that my self awareness is a stumbling block - that if I could only be a lot dumber I could be more successful, or at least *think* I was.

Turns out - I was right.

I, for one, welcome our tipsy MILF overlords.

  • Destroying America

[Read the article: Fox isn't the only "fair and balanced" one]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Has anyone in the media ever -- EVER -- asked other Christians to PROVE they aren't part of a group seeking to destroy the U.S. or its government"

They don't need to. I can prove it with an etch-a-sketch and new clippings fromt he last 6 years.

  • Not Back Stabbing

[Read the article: Right, but actually winning the White House would have been nice, too]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I thought that John Kerry was a douchebag when I voted for him, and I still think he is today. However, he was certainly the far lesser of two evils back in 2004.

That said, I would like to vote for someone I actually like and support next time around...assuming that the democratic party can dredge someone up. With Feingold out of the running I am not seeing anybody out there.

I would really like to see someone who *can* deliver a joke.

  • Hello forest, meet the trees

    [Read the article: The Fix]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Fox is collaborating with "24" co-creator Joel Surnow to develop a satirical news show geared to appeal to the political right, an as-yet unnamed show that Surnow describes as "'The Daily Show' for conservatives."

Doesn't Fox already have 24 hours of satirical news coverage that appeals to the political right?

  • 6 of one, 6.5 billion of another

[Read the article: "We do not respect your son"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"It'd bring great anxiety not only to him but to his supporters."

Yes, but I'm sure that the other 99% of the world's population would LOVE to hear what you have to say.
