Clipperriffic!

I, for one, stand cheering for the Clippers and the emerging order, whose red white and blue uniforms symbolize the promise of the American dream, the perfect champions of the city on a hill, that fresh green breast of the new world -- The sun is shining and it's going to be a Clipperrific day!

hollywood & money

I'm not going to say that people who make movies don't care about money. Why would they be so different from the rest of us? Certainly the financial backers would hope for a return on their investment.

Nevertheless, back in the day, I was a grad student studying military history & popular culture. Did a paper on early postwar war movies. Of course I watched the movies and read history books/articles about the Cold War, postwar America, hollywood, and the navy, army, marines and the recently created air force. Also, I read production archives for as many of the movies as I could.

You know what I found? Some low budget, b-movie from 1957? What records existed were strictly functional, shooting schedules, some promo material. A movie like "Task Force" with Gary Cooper and Jane Wyatt? Everything, including letters and memos between people involved in the project like the writer and producer saying stuff about how important it is to show people the role the Navy and aircraft carriers played in winning the war -- and why the Navy was still important.

Sometimes, the people who make movies really do care about the messages, causes, crusades. Probably, those who think that it's all about money, think that people who don't are naive. Having done some research in the matter, I believe it is safe to say that it's the cynics who are naive.

Congressional Priorities

I'm just thankful that when rising sea levels caused by global warming put Florida under the Atlantic, all the Cubans, Hatians and Puerto Ricans I'll be rafting with will be singing our national anthem in ENGLISH!

Re: Fighting The Wrong Battle

I don't know if you know this, No Name Given, but Michelle Goldberg actually has written about greenhouse gas emissions and CO2 and whatnot.

Which reminds me, last year, when I was still a struggling law student (now a struggling associate) I think I wrote to MG about a enviro law paper I was writing, she wrote back, and I don't think I ever thanked her. So ... thank you!

Tom in Brazil re: trains and buses

Since you live in Brazil, maybe you don't know this, but Greyhound sucks. When I was younger, I had to ride buses sometimes on trips from Boise to OK City. Sometimes it was fun hanging out in bus terminals (since I was young and didn't know any better). Sometimes it was dirty and creepy. Mostly it was just blah. And once I got lice. Yech. As far as trains go, yes, trains are cool. But to get from LA to the Bay by train, one has to also take the bus. So there you go. Although I suppose if I ever find myself in Brazil, I will take the bus, since apparently that is the way to travel there.

Chafee v Lieberman

"And you'd never see him on talking head shows bashing his own party."

Which is why the Democrats were justified in dumping that douche Lieberman, even if he could usually be trusted on the issues, and the Republicans are justified in supporting Chafee, even if he sometimes (often?) dissents from the party line.

Oh, you crybabies!

Grief? Sadness? Bitterness? Showing feelings of an almost human nature?

Fear not! The wise letter writers of Salon will show you how pathetic you are.

You wanna see tragedy? You wanna see pain? No matter what you've lost, what you've suffered, heroic Salon letter writers can point to those who've suffered WAY more than you -- so why don't you put a sock in it already? Nobody wants to hear your complaints, ok? JUST. GET. OVER. IT.

Christ, we're horrid.

True Value of Neifi Perez

Maybe the key to Neifi is that while one must possess Neifi, one must never use Neifi. Kind of like the atomic bomb. Neifi, like the A-bomb, provides a sense of security in oneself. Nevertheless, to use Neifi would be a senseless act of self-destruction, smelling of desperation.

Now this is a little outside the box, but maybe we should give Neifi to Iran in exchange for Iran abandoning their pursuit of atomic weaponry.

Virginia

I hope I am too cynical, but I don't think there is any way that Allen will lose. Virginians know he is a big ole racist. They don't want to say, "Go Allen!" But in the solitude of the voting booth? Yeah, they'll vote for him.

To those who hate HH

If you don't like her, don't read her. Seriously. This isn't a "why don't you find something better to do with your time" thing, although there's that too. It's just the rational response. You don't like her. Yet you read her. So her editorials get hits, which Salon monitors. So they keep her. Duh. If you didn't read her, then Salon would let her go. Readership = $$$. It doesn't matter if the readers hate the writer. This isn't rocket science.

BTW, I like HH, so I don't have a problem with you haters reading her work.

Why $1 billion Wouldn't Work

If the Sox offered Seibu that much money, Seibu would have to be pretty stupid not to see that negotiations would not take place in good faith. Seibu would then take a lower bid that they thought might be fruitful.

To rikkeller

You have the quote right, but I've always heard it attributed to P.T. Barnum.

This week's edition has been online for literally *minutes* and you haven't posted your tirade yet? Are you in bed with croup or ague?
