NC White Woman here...

... and I voted for Obama, but don't mind me. According to multiple people here, I don't exist.

OK, you said no Disney, but...

...I'm another old Disney fan. Seconding Cat From Outer Space.

Also, maybe I missed it, but The Ugly Dachshund is a great flick about a big dog adopted by a mama doxie and her litter. And for sheer goofy hilarity, there are some wonderful moments in Sammy the Way-Out Seal. You simply cannot go wrong with Santa Claus Vs. the Martians if your kids are the type to appreciate goofy humor. (Older kids may prefer the MST3K version, see below!) The Shaggy Dog is OK for small kids who like to be scared a bit. Older kids won't bat an eye.

For the youngers, jumping on the Totoro bandwagon. I could watch that movie 8000 times myself. My older daughter adored Kiki's Delivery Service at age three. And any house without a copy of Milo and Otis is a sad, sad place.

Older, snarky kids may appreciate some of the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 shorts or features - prescreen to be sure they fit your family, but they're usually fairly clean. LadyHawke - Rutger Hauer as a badass, almost antihero good guy plus Matthew Broderick honing the toward-the-camera snark which would later fill Ferris... comedy gold, with great action sequences.

Budding SF fans will probably enjoy Doctor Who, especially the old ones. Note that a lot of these are somewhat scary, but fun for those who enjoy that! You'll love the frayed-shoestring-budget sets and props. The older series is set up as 2-6 episode serials, each episode less than half an hour, so you have built-in stretch breaks.

Doctor Who...

...the old stuff, not the new stuff (although that's good in its own right!).

It's not that hard a concept, it was intended as a kids' show, and the shoestring-snapped budget FX will make everyone giggle (we used that as a jumping-off point for the concept of "suspension of disbelief"). Quite a few episodes are now available on DVD.

Six and up normally, but my two-year-old stops in her tracks and looks at the TV every time she hears the theme music, and she cheers every time the Doctor is onscreen (and that goes for all of the incarnations of the character she's seen).

Furthermore, for car trips, download some of Big Finish's Doctor Who audios to your mp3 player from their website. Hey presto! Radio drama!
