"Can we reduce the impact of the pollutants? "We can control persistent organic pollutants," says Muir. It's well documented that when hazardous chemicals -- including mercury -- are taken out of use, environmental levels decrease. And if affected populations are sufficiently healthy, they will recover."
There is an international agreement to curb the use of POP's, called the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, which the US signed but did not ratify. Even China signed and ratified it. Yikes.

again, Glenn. I saw somebody already posted a comment citing the article from The Nation.
I've never set foot in Harvard, but apparently many comment writers are saying that it is has a cold, elitist, racist environment.
If that is the case, find friends elsewhere. There are so many colleges and universities in the Boston area.

...why are you here instead of Iraq? When are you going to do more than wear your keyboard out spouting easily-disproved crap talking points?
Because, he already sacrificed his mind and his Salon username for the GOP, which is enough in his mind.
the Pixies could release a new album...
Congratulations, Glenn. Glad to hear you mentioned the $50 000 ads. What is the content of the ads?
Little Brother- healthy skepticism is welcomed by me. I hope it's not some knee-jerk reaction that you have to any piece of writing. Misplaced skepticism and misplaced praise are nearly the same thing.
Nearly everyone who has considered this problem, especially in the context of a democracy, has acknowledged the need for education to ameliorate these tendencies and to cultivate minds that will consider the world critically in an intelligent way.
I agree. But how can this happen if the very people who are part of the education system are defending the media or the Bush administration? Does this mean America is doomed?
Exactly. How do these people become professors? When this type of senseless thinking and smugness seeps into the academia, then all hope is lost. I mean, I kind of get the psychological reasons why journalists would defend the media. But a Tufts professor? And let's not forget that Yoo is a professor at Berkeley law.
means: "Black kid" Obama- Anything is possible!
Here's my rough translation of a section on the page:
Two years ago, very few people in the world knew of this "Black kid" Obama. But today, this 47 year-old ethnic African, charismatic and bright, has become the most moving American presidential candidate.
In America's online world, Obama has remained an all-time hot topic. The video of Obama's speech in Philadelphia was the most popular video on the Internet.
In the age of the Internet, it does not matter if one is a common civilian, from a metropolis or from a rural area. As long as one is hardworking and tries to fulfill one's dreams, even an ordinary civilian (as Obama once was), can become a presidential candidate.
Can we make a meta-press?
Something like Media Matters?

Would you want a department store manager or orthodontist running the Pentagon?
Oh of course not. Yeah, get the idiot who was involved with Iran-Contra to run it instead.
The AP article can be found here:

pagewanted=1&_r=1&sq=mukasey&st=nyt&scp=2
But for those of you who don't want to be subjected to torture, here's a condensed version.
[Mukasey tears up about 9/11 and eavesdropping, grew up in the Bronx, hardly gains any weight, loves his wife and grandchildren] ...it is important for the public to feel comfortable with Mukasey, said political scientist and psychoanalyst Stanley Renshon.
"People want to make sure they're not getting another controversial figure," said Renshon, a professor at the City University of New York. "You want to have someone up there who gives the impression that they know what's going on.
...
In sum, Mukasey said there was little to prepare him for being attorney general — for either the substance part of the job or the spotlight.
MSM outlets are depend on generating media hype to attract more viewers and earn more profit. Logically, any half-decent story on Mukasey or John Yoo would certainly generate more (well-placed) controversy than a story on Obama's bowling. So one would presume that the press corps would jump on Mukasey's speech. The fact that they aren't doing that makes me suspicious of the way the MSM makes money...
Colbert's WH Press Correspondent's Dinner speech is probably the bravest most profound public speaking done in America in my lifetime. This man stood a few feet from the president and TORE into him, then when he'd finished humiliating the president, he unloaded on the rest of the room, courageously calling out the press corps for the failures they were. It was the most inspirational public speaking I'd ever seen. -FilthyHarry
