It just seems morbid to me
[Read the article: Birth certificates for stillbirth?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why would I want a piece of a dead relative? If you want a piece of paper that says that you born a stillborn child, then make it yourself. To me it is just a sign of selfishness. I need something to help me remember. What consideration is there for the dead child? Does the dead child care that there is no certificate recording its existence?
As to the person calling down the writer for being too literal. Sorry. This is an opinion piece. If you don't like the opinion, then maybe you should read something else or attack the thoughts rather than the person.

Imus is responsible
[Read the article: Black rappers made him do it!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Imus is responsible for Imus. Black rappers didn't make him say anything. If a racist makes a comment, then I can blame my stupid comments on him? Maybe if I am a sheltered child. But, a fully grown man who lives in a diverse city should know better.
Still, I don't think Imus should have been fired for this. If he had been warned that his antics have cross a line and the next time he would be fired, then fire him for this incident. But, if he has been rewarded for such talk because it brings listeners and viewers, then the stations are just as culpable as Imus in this situation.
Oh, when will Rush get fired for his racist and misogynist rants? Oh, is there a double standard? figures.

Mechanics
[Read the article: I'm almost 21. Should I buy some guns?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If the fascination is really with the mechanical aspects of a gun, then you don't need to buy a gun. Buy a car and tinker with it.
I think the LW is not being honest with himself about this romantic relationship with guns. There seems to be something deeper which has nothing to do with the beauty of a how a tool is constructed. Otherwise, he would just be into the beauty of mechanisms - like clocks or cars or trains or whatever.

Wow
[Read the article: What is the rationale behind the prescription drug laws?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Doctors are there to do the research and have the knowledge about these drugs. If you had written, "a mentally competent and well informed adult", then you might have a point. But, being simply mentally competent should not be enough to demand a certain drug unless you are willing to accept that you hold all responsibility for taking this drug with no liability left with the doctor or pharmacist. Further, the only liability that a drug company has is that the contents are what has been advertised.
Most people who want these drugs for whatever reasons will not waive all their rights to sue when things go wrong. And, if the drug is a psychological manipulative drug, then things will go wrong.
This article is poorly thought out and stupid.

Even if it costs a great deal
[Read the article: "In fact, ocean desalination does not work"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What are the other options? The underground water resources are limited by the amount of runoff produced in a given year. If the fossil water has been mined, then it doesn't matter how much energy it costs to produce water from the ocean - you need to do it. The other option is to stop growth in large cities and try to put population into areas that have enough water. Both of these options are ones that Food & Water Watch seems to prefer.
And, there is the claim that the Tampa Bay desalination plant is a failure. Since March of 2003, the plant has produced nearly 5 billion gallons of water. This is about 3 million gallons per day. Of course, the rated output should have been 25 million gallons per day. In comparison, it is a failure. But, 3 million gallons of water per day is nothing to sneeze at. One might ask why the plant has failed? The contractor made mistakes, and it went bankrupt trying to fix the mistakes. So, what was the water authority to do? Throw away the plant when the problems that lead to the plant's construction were still around? No. They have contracted to fix the issues.
Ultimately, the complaining group has an agenda. And, this colors their view of what is best. Food & Water Watch is not objective no more than a neocon is objective about the war in Iraq.

Adjust for inflation
[Read the article: The psychology of $4 a gallon gasoline]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you adjust for inflation (see link below), the cost of gas is still less than it was in 1979-80. So, until gas prices increase significantly more, the overall cost is not too bad. Gas has been too cheap for too long, and one could look at the current prices as a market correction.

I hope
[Read the article: Mission accomplished]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I hope that the Congress just doesn't address the issue again. There was a viable bill that funded the troops with a compromise that set benchmarks for an ordered withdrawal. Bush got somehting he wanted (troop funding) and the Democrats got something they wanted (troop withdrawal). It should have been a win, win for the "uniter not a divider". But, it was vetoed.
What needs to happen is for congress to move onto other issues. Do not pass another bill for troop funding. Kill any bill raised by Republicans for troop funding. Bush needs to understand that he is not running the show unopposed anymore. He should have signed the funding bill. And, Democrats need to make him pay for it.

I disagree
[Read the article: Reid on Bush: He knows we're here]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The option of not allowing this bill to happen is still there. It has to be there otherwise all the President has to do is veto anything he doesn't like, demand changes and wait because the Congress does not have the will to thwart him.
Bush got a bill that would give him funding. He vetoed it. The blame rests solely with Bush. It is time to move onto other issues instead of kowtowing to the President on this bill. Bush is not a Monarch. If he wants something, then he has to compromise. Vetoing a bill with limited teeth is not compromising.
Bush is playing hardball. If you aren't willing to play hardball back, then you should resign your office.
