Just a note to the editor
[Read the article: Diamonds and pearls and the b-word]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After Salon publicly reviled Britney Spears and savaged her new album, don't you think it's mind-blowingly hypocritical to keep throwing her name out to attract attention to Salon political coverage?
So far there have been two articles that have had nothing to do with her yet managed to use her name in the headline.
If she's so bad and you're all so good, then why is this happening at all?

This really sucks
[Read the article: Oiled migration]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That's all I can say other than good article on something that really sucks.
As far as oil consumption goes, we paid almost more than we could afford for a house so my husband could walk to work. And small shopping trips are made on foot.
Hope that helps!

Are Americans really this confused about WWII?
[Read the article: Rudy Giuliani's messianic paranoia]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Do most Americans not understand that the most horrific battles with the worst casualties that did the most damage to the Nazi war machine were fought on the eastern front by Communists, not in France or Italy by Americans?
Have Americans been that seriously misled by American war movies?
Once I showed up in Moscow on Victory weekend. I forgot to change my money at the airport, I didn't have a Metro pass and I was staying in a private apartment. And everything was closed for the holiday. So I had absolutely nothing to do for three days but watch Soviet war movies on Russian TV.
Man those things can make you cry!!! Americans never suffered like that during the war. I spent three days crying and crying and crying over how the Russians suffered during WWII.
Some of those movies should be shown on American TV.
Then more Americans will understand why Sergeant Schultz was so afraid of being sent to the Russian Front by Colonel Klink.

These are such incredibly courageous people
[Read the article: Saudi rape victim punished, again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The girl and her lawyer.
Somebody always has to step into the line of fire when change is being made. Thank God such people exist.

If you want to get back in touch with reality
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The only fire I know that had anything to do with marijuana in Southern California happened a few years ago when a state police marijuana eradication helicopter flew into some wire and crashed, spilling gasoline all over and setting a huge fire that charred a good portion of the hills near Ventura County.
If you're going to hate people because they start fires, then maybe you ought to think about those pothead-hating maniacs flying around in helicopters filled with flammable fuel over tinder dry forests during fire season looking for marijuana gardens to bust.
Just a thought.

I wish Weeds wouldn't get renewed
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's turned into porn. I hate it.
It's funny how nobody wants to be honest about marijuana. They want it to be porn. They don't want it to be about science.
Look at Salon. They use marijuana for its lurid porn aspect. Advertising this show. Yes, they'll pimp the porn. But forget the science. You'll never see a word about the science here.
You'll only get to see the porn.
And the Democrats are going to restore respect for science in the White House.
Right!

In fact I'd like to organize a boycott of the show
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]That fire starting business really pissed me off.
What about that huge fire the marijuana eradication helicopter caused?
Oh sorry, that's the real world.
We don't deal with the real world in America.

How many people think Salon is hypocritical
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]for pimping Weeds as TV porn while refusing to cover marijuana when Congress is voting on it or the candidates are taking stands on it?
Maybe I need to break my Salon habit. Why should I support a publication that pimps lurid marijuana porn while refusing to cover legitimate marijuana politics or science?

Maybe Cheech and Chong were neuroscientists too
[Read the article: "Proust Was a Neuroscientist"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Did novelist George Eliot anticipate the ability of the brain to grow new cells?
October 2005 NORML press release:
Baltimore, MD: The administration of synthetic cannabinoids promotes the proliferation of newborn neurons (nerve cells) in the rat brain which likely accounts for the drug's anti-anxiety and mood elevating effects, according to preclinical trial data published today in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Seriously though (although the above research certainly is serious) -- about art and science -- the best talk I ever heard on the subject was by Czech immunologist/poet Miroslav Holub at the Aspen Writer's Conference.
Science deals only with measurable reality. It's good for sharpening the mind, for training one to be precise and disciplined in one's descriptions of the world.
Then you take that sharpened mind and let go of mere physical reality and you write a poem about flypaper that ends with the line "Arbeit Macht Frei."
