So where was the actual science in this "study?
[Read the article: Binge-drinking problem? Blame Amy Winehouse! ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I see their study determined that more young women than young men binge drink.
But what exactly was the scientific methodology they implemented to establish this causal connection they're touting between the numbers they measured and the presence of Amy Winehouse?
If they did establish a causal connection, then the newspaper article didn't do anything to explain their methodology.
I'm concluding from this that it's not only addicts who fill our lives with lies and pseudo-information.
No, the people fighting addiction are big liars and obfuscators too and seem to be almost as manipulative and untrustworthy as the addicts themselves.
When, dear God, will the people fighting addiction stop trying to manipulate us and dumb us down with lies and half truths???
Don't we get enough of this behavior from the addicts themselves?

See here's the part that I will never understand
[Read the article: Should I tell my kids about all the drugs I used to do?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Addicts are liars. That's the thing people usually learn first when there's an alcoholic in the home. Addicts lie.
So we're supposed to PREVENT addiction by acting like an addict and lying?
Look at our whole drug policy. Look at Salon.
The reason Salon will never cover cannabinoid science is because even at Salon, people who hate the Bush administration for lying are perfectly happy to enable government lies about cannabis.
So we have lying and we have the enabling of lying.
But look around -- the addicts are still here! None of this lying and enabling of lying has made any difference.
Maybe we should try a radical new tactic -- like not lying and not enabling liars?

Ugly Betty
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]is practically the only thing I watch any more, aside from Weeds, Frasier reruns, Mystery on PBS, and the Naked Archaeologist on History International.
I need more Betty. Must have Betty. Betty rules.
Simcha's hard to resist too. He's a very skillful manipulator of his audience, but he does it to take us through the process of scientific discovery in Biblical archaeology.
I wish Simcha would appear on Betty. He has the perfect personality for that show and he's one sexy Middle Eastern man as well.

Nebris is this what's going on?
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Americans, rich or poor, now live in a culture entirely perceived through, simulacra-media images and illusions.
Is this why we get tons and tons of coverage of the TV comedy "Weeds" in the media, but when scienists discover that cannabis might provide the world's first known treatment for a PRION INFECTION, the story gets ignored completely by the press?

I'll name one challenge now
[Read the article: Divine politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The vigilant moderns of today face other challenges
I think one challenge is represented by the fact that Salon has a technology columnist and an economics columnist, but no science columnist.
I understand this is because everything in Salon has to have some political spin, and you can't really do decent science reporting if your only criterion for printing a story is political.
But this does sort of play into the hands of the people you oppose.

Excellent point about Afghanistan
[Read the article: Mission accomplished -- for Iran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The Taliban's past relationship with Afghan Shiites could be classified as genocidal.
And Iran has traditionally been the ally of whatever local power in Afghanistan is opposed to the Sunni mullahs.
You see this is what happens when you make lying into an official government policy. I can't believe anyone with a degree not from a religious college in the Bush administration actually buys this nonsense. This has to be a consciously crafted lie on someone's part.
Amazon.com has a huge selection of books on Afghanistan. You can open any single one of those books and understand why the Taliban would never work with Iran just from skimming a few relevant chapters.
What kind of flight from reality is this country on these days?
Is it ever going to end?
Are the grownups ever going to get back in power?

If only
[Read the article: Turning Ahmadinejad into public enemy No. 1]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If only there were some strong Sunni secularist leader in the region who could be played against Ahmadinejad and used to keep Ahmadinejad preoccupied with a threat of war on his border.
Is the Witch of Endor still around by any chance?

See it starts with lying and it ends with this
[Read the article: Should I tell my kids about all the drugs I used to do?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- A government-run human rights commission accused soldiers of rape and torture on Friday and recommended the army be pulled out of Mexico's nationwide drug war.
Jose Luis Soberanes of the National Human Rights Commission said four cases of abuse were documented.
The report by the National Human Rights Commission is the first official document to back up long-standing allegations of human rights abuses by soldiers ordered by President Felipe Calderon to retake large swaths of territory controlled by powerful drug cartels.
See, the people fighting drug addiction are now acting at least as bad as the addicts they're fighting.
It starts with a little lying and it escalates to this.
Isn't there an honest, nonviolent way to fight addiction?
If there isn't, then maybe addiction is the lesser of evils.

About unequal drug sentencing
[Read the article: After Jena]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The War on Drugs reduces racial equality in America every single day. It's time for people to set some timetables and benchmarks. Either make the war equal or just stop it entirely.
America was envisioned as a nation of equality before it was ever envisioned as nation without drugs.
