Really stupid question!
[Read the article: "When she comes on TV, I involuntarily cross my legs."]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"If the majority of voters are women, why aren't there a majority of women in elective office."
Because women aren't the Borg. We're not only capable of holding opinions that differ from each other, we can even--gasp!--vote on the basis of the issues we care about rather than gender.
There's also the fact that most candidates for any given public office are men. How many times have women even been given the opportunity to vote for a woman, for any reason? Not many. More than there used to be, but not many.
The irony here is that the very same people who ask this will throw a hissy if the male-female ratio in any governmental body approaches parity. They'll insist that the only way that many women could get into office was if things were somehow crooked.
I also read somewhere that when women contribute more than 30% of the conversation, men think they're talking too much.

Babies and the brain
[Read the article: I'm a mom who needs more solitude]
[Read more letters about this article: Here].it's because she apparently didn't give much thought to whether someone with her personality and goals really wanted (or needed) to be a mother.
What the heck to people think, that babies just magically happen at a woman's whim?
My son was conceived when my birth control failed. As I was using birth control in spite of being told that neither my husband nor I were likely to be able to have kids, that should tell you something.
However, I didn't consider abortion to be a quick, painless medical procedure that would relieve me of an unwanted growth. I certainly didn't consider the situation dire enough to warrant it. So I gave birth, endured the ensuing divorce, and gritted my teeth until my son was able to cope long enough without Mommy for Mommy to get the down time she needed on a consistent basis without spending money we didn't have for sitters, summer camps and all of that other expensive, middle-class stuff. We had to sort it out on our own.
And what do you know? This woman who never wanted or planned to be a mother turned out to love it overall, which just goes to show that you really don't know what's going to happen to your brain when you have kids. As hard as those first years were, I've never regretted it.
The self-righteous judging is just silly. How could the LW have known how she would react to a small child in the house 24/7 if she'd never been in that situation before? For that matter, even if she had, she couldn't have known because every child is different, but really, if you had asked me pre-baby if I wanted a living room full of teenagers, I would have laughed in your face. However, the reality is more the lines of having a living room full of puppies, and I enjoy it very much.

I personally would welcome this
[Read the article: Today in "Ugh": The perfect woman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Think about what's being advertised here. I don't mind doing the faithful and intelligent part, but "owned by you"? Don't want to go there. Don't want to date anyone who wants that. Don't know any flesh and blood woman who gets into that, unless she's into BDSM and that's a whole different ballgame.
If robots can fill that gap, why not?
It's also interesting to note that when it comes to sex toys, women seem to prefer physical gratification while men prefer emotional gratification. That's what a RealDoll is, a vehicle for emotional gratification. The sex part can be had with a Fleshlight, but that doesn't seem to quite do it.

Creepiness
[Read the article: Today in "Ugh": The perfect woman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]But my feelings about them changed when I watched some youtube videos of Real Doll owners with their dolls. They are creepy as fuck in person. It's like having a dead girl in the room.
That was my thought, too. It was horrible to watch, but I also realized that I wouldn't have stepped in as a live replacement. These guys were missing a psychological/emotional aspect of personality that I consider crucial in relationships, but it made the whole RealDoll thing work. To them, it was even better than a living woman, and given my revulsion and pity toward the men themselves, I had to conclude that this was the best possible solution all around.
So why not? It's true. Women don't want these men. These men want emotional gratification. If life-sized dolls or androids will work, I don't have an issue with that.
