Original article: Alberto Gonzales testifies

Last Chance

This was AG's big chance to improve his stock. Instead, he appears to have come back with a lot more of the same totally questionable testimony. He has not helped himself at all. Quite the opposite--he's lost even more support. At the same time, the Senate must do more than simply grill him. At some point, they need to exercise some power.

I hope that there are some in the White House who may be losing a bit of their contempt for congress, and replacing it with a bit of fear. This would be a very healthy thing, imo.

Original article: Gonzales' Fan Club of One

Bush's style

He is not "stubborn", nor is he being contrary, imo. He has always been this way, as Governor and President. He is bluffing. Call his bluff, and he will change 180 degrees on a dime, and will never comment about it, or comment as minimally as possible. Rumsfeld was a perfect example. He's bluffing.

Gonzales is indeed gone, for the reasons thomas c wrote--summed it up beautifully.

Respect does not equal silence

I personally reject the notion that respect can only be shown through silence. For those who support gun control, and who spoke out soon after the VT mass murder, silence would have quite the opposite of respect. Quite the opposite of "elevated" tone.

There has been more than enough silence regarding this issue, silence which has been bought and paid for.

So not only is Mr. Krauthammer a hypocrite. He is a hypocrite with a bad thesis.

"Using Grief for Political Gain"

One man's 'political gain' is another man's 'benefit to society'. Our government, be it local, state, or federal NEVER acts in front of problems--but always in reaction to them. Much of our health and safety code, criminal law, really all law, is constructed in reaction to glaring problems, many of them brought to light by specific, often dramatic events or catastrophes.

As such, our government and our society has a certain form of intelligence. Biologists and those in the medical field call it "response to stimulus". You poke the organism, and it moves away. You shine a light in the eye, and the pupil contracts. The organism reacts, responds to stimuli--it has some form of intelligence.

Even Bush, when standing on the rubble that hid not 33 bodies, but thousands, exhibited this intelligence, when he yelled through the megaphone "...and they're ALL going to hear from us soon...". Little did we know then what "ALL" actually meant.

Be very suspicious of those who say "Wait. Don't think. Don't respond. Be still. Grieve. Be Respectful. Be Quiet. Comply." They are asking us to surrender that small portion of intelligence we collectively control.

Ask yourself why someone would make such a request.

Occam's Razor Needed

"Her book, ...titled Londinistan, warns of "the collapse of traditional British identity and accommodation of a particularly virulent form of multiculturalism."

Occam's Razor: one should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything."

I see a relationship between Phillips' book and the featured article regarding WMDs. There is a proven, clear threat in europe of home-grown islamimicist terrorism. One prevailing explanation for this threat is that Islamic populations have never been integrated into european society politically, socially, or economically. Rather, in many european nations the Islamic population is imprisoned as a permanent under-class. The resulting hardships and frustrations provide fertile ground for radical recruitment, just as it does in the Middle East, and elsewhere.

One solution to the above is to take steps to integrate that segment of society into the whole. To remove the frustration. To foster economic growth and social justice.

However, if one views integration as a "loss of British [French/German/Dutch/Spanish] identity"--if one views diversity as a form of 'virulent' disease--if one wishes to maintain a strict socioeconomic class system in one's country-- then the above solution, while sensible and fairly direct, is unacceptable. Occam just won't do.

It therefore becomes important to explain why such integration cannot be undertaken. One way is to simply label the Muslims as evil. And, if it makes sense that we can't negotiate with evil countries, we damn well better not integrate it within our own country.

But another explanation is that they--the underclass--are simply too dangerous to integrate, which is where the WMDs play a role. So long as the WMDs are out there, somewhere, buried in the sands, they can be unearthed by evil and smuggled internationally by evil and exploded in a double-decker bus by our very own, unacceptably dangerous, underclass.

Re: Update 2

"with regard specifically to the issue of whether Saddam had WMDs, Bolton said: "I fully believe that all of the evidence on that is not yet in."

Bolton's correct--the physical evidence has been purely negative, and it continues to roll in, day after day.

Re: mapping sharia project suggestion

I feel the sharia database and mapping project would be more useful to me, as an individual user, if they included the locations of all Starbucks Coffee shops nationwide. This is not because I view Starbucks Coffee outlets as a threat to our national security, or to our american way of life, but rather because I drive a bit in my work and I enjoy a nice coffee on the road.

Local, independent coffee shops would be fine too. These should be added as well, I think.

Come to think of it, the locations of Mosques and Muslim learning centers should probably be deleted from the database, as these probably don't serve coffee to the public. And their entries just get in the way of finding a good coffee place. So then, to sum up the above, add all the coffeehouse data, then delete the Islamic data. Thank you.
