MOYERS & MADDOW

I saw you on both and I agree. Obviously Moyers function before he was fired by w and after he came back, was to take an in depth approach--and he lets the interviewee speak. He is not required to look at the clock. Which is why I also enjoy the C_SPAN format on the weekends.

I always felt the 'media' (whatever that is) was set up for conservatives, not just because of an informal fairness doctrine that gives lip service to both sides (whatever that means)but because they are damn good at sound bites.

Moyers proved with you last night, that issues can be discussed in depth with reference to some history, some facts. Life is complicated and Disney's directive to cartoonists to shorten and exaggerate does nothing to help the spread of information.

What is fascinating to me is the play between the web and TV and it is great. Professionals like Greenwald & Walsh and even those from TPM, Daily Beast and Politico have a hand on the pulse of many people. And I see them all on cable news. It is much more refreshing that just listening to the same talking points, over and over.

Thank you.

Original article: My year in politics

JOAN WALSH--NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

Beautiful recap of a long year, even for an old man like myself.

I also more than appreciated the Turow piece from 2004. The new face of the Democratic Party.

Sometimes I think that those that get it right should be rewarded. Scott Turow really got it right almost five years ago.To look back over that period of time and to be able to see what Scott saw, really grabbed me.

The so-called 'media' is too forgiving of those who continually get it wrong, like Kristol. Did he get anything correct this year? All his predictions were wrong. Of course his play by play is always wrong because his bias is so transparent.

Joan Walsh is so open about her fears and hopes over the last year that it reminds me of some of my own fears and hopes.

But where Joan really gets it right is the her treatment of Obama as a transformational figure individually as well as nationally. Barack got better and better as the debates wore on. A lot of people griped about how long the process was--two years and scores of debates scheduled for both parties.

At first, he would pause too much, almost hemming and hawing to the point where the listener became lost to the point of forgetting the original question. The pausing became less and less until he had almost perfected his style by the time he faced McCain.

That is what made this race so interesting to me.

Somehow, when you win, it all seems worth it.

Original article: With the real celebrities

Joan

I love the idea that you are on the street hobnobbing with real people, in real cafes. It really gives us a three dimensional picture of what was taking place. All these strangers together for one purpose and sharing with each other.

Good article for us stuck with cable news.

WSJ/ THE FOX NEWS

Glenn, WSJ has just gotten worse and worse and worse since Murdoch took over. It is so bad that it has become its own parody.

Their interview with Gonzo gave me grist for a four page satire that did not have to reword one of his statements. Basically he was working on a book but he could not include national securty issues or anything having to do with ongoing investigations and it was all ok because he had no publisher anyway. I simply responded that I had six blank notebooks and no publisher either.

Not more than a few days ago Rove did an editorial highlighting the successes in w's administration. Basically, we had no terrorist attacks after 9/11/01. All I had to add was that there had been no destructive meteors had hit a major U.S. city and no aliens had landed announcing their plan to harvest the human race as a new food source for their waning planet.

He reiterated, of course, that there was 52 months of solid job growth while w was at the nation's helm. I was reminded of this while banking bigwigs were telling Congress that except for the last year or so, the banking industry had done a pretty good job during the previous seven years.

Meanwhile, Bill Orally is reporting on Fox what a terrible communicator Obama is.

My only point here is that whether it is TPM, Salon or many other web sites, your posts are of the utmost importance and are quoted liberally. Every time someone lies on Fox News or the Fox Newspapers, someone has to stand up and note the lie and refute it, no matter how inane or how silly.

You and a few other sites like Media Matters, are of the utmost importance in this battle for the minds of the electorate.

Keep up the good work!!!
