Absolutely, what those kids are doing is therapeutic and developmentally healthy in lots of ways, maybe why it resonates so nicely with the viewer. Differentiating from parents and family, choosing their own new social connections, using their bodies, building competence and learning to communicate and cooperate, experiencing the powerful archetypes of musical form, coordinated group movement and organic form, it’s all good.

This was, after all, a 4th of July parade, a celebration of nationalism and patriotism – that is to say, an expression of forms of psychopathology driven by fear and the consequent need to express valuation of conformity, rigidity of thinking, external and hierarchical control of behaviors, safety in group inclusion, and marginalization and denigration of the “others” and of deviant, disallowed behaviors as threats to order and security.

In that context, should we be surprised to also see expressions of class- and gender-based aggression and marginalization aimed at uncontrolled sexual behavior? No one cares about the social costs of the pregnancies, or the best interests of the teens, but what is intolerable and threatening is that the young women would dare to take deliberate control of their own sexual and reproductive behaviors. The video of the parade was seamless – the national symbols, the militia firing in unison, the marginalization of strong, autonomous female celebrities, and the denigration of sexual choice - elements all one in the same, and all driven by fear.
