Jon Stewart's smackdown of Cramer was the turnaround

As is often the case, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart told the story in the way that the conservative media just didn't have the guts to. By putting a voice and a face to the lies and deception, Stewart sparked a populist uprising.

Further: By putting the deception in front of the face when Cramer couldn't hide behind his own tv network, Stewart showed just how deeply the "experts" are entrenched -- and criminally liable.

You're right, Glenn, that there the "outrage" has been muted, if not downright muffled. Remember when Bob Dole's campaign slogan was "Where's the Outrage" over a minor sexual encounter that didn't cost the taxpayers any money? Ah, those were the days. The AFA can get mad at Pepsi and MacDonald's for giving workers health benefits, but the right wing just can't bring themselves to look in a mirror.

Republicans are always soft on crime... when its theirs.

Jon Stewart and Glenn Greenwald can and should illuminate individual crimes and the lack of personal accountability that characterizes the far right. Just don't think your job is done, okay?

The issues are complex. AIG employees for taking the money and running isn't really the problem. Getting mad at a few incompetent and immoral people is all well and good but we need, as Taibbi says, "to bring the financial system back to a place where sanity is restored'. Taking a few greedy miscreants to the woodshed is a good start, but only a start.

...and he is us

The object of terrorism is to create terror. When Democrats are in power, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself." When Republicans are in power, we sink to their level.

Thanks for the update, Glenn. We need transparency and accountability. Ford's pardon of Nixon looks worse and worse as we get farther away from the crimes that were never fully investigated and the damage to the US that was never allowed to heal.

Obama is smart enough to know that our long, national nightmare is just beginning. Let's see some of that oft cited but never demonstrated "personal responsibility" from the right: Man up, guys, and admit you blew it. America needs you to come clean.

Release 'em and tax 'em

Good work Jim Webb; good article Glenn Greenwald.

Allow me to make the Compassionate Conservative argument for prison reform: It will lower taxes. Instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars to keep non-violent prisoners in confinement, they can be out in the workforce earning money and paying taxes. Some will be on probation and need outpatient (?) rehabilitation, but that's still cheaper than keeping them in jail.

Treating low-grade criminals like human beings will help every aspect of society. Individual responsibility and reinventing oneself are the shared values we Americans are proud of. Everyone wins.

(Except, of course, those who are using the prison system as a way to suppress certain segments of voters. But we can't have that. If all Americans can't vote, the terrorists win.)

Timing is everything

Republicans are always soft on crime... when it's theirs. Democrats always screw things up when they behave like Republicans. We're seeing both these principles at work over the torture memos.

I don't mind, as Glenn mentions, " the Obama administration's desire to have a few additional weeks" to deal with this particular leftover from the Bush administration. The torture has stopped (we hope) and cleaning up the mess is a lesser priority.

Still, I'm glad you're making sure the crimes aren't forgotten. We need to hold conservatives up to their vaunted "personal responsibility" sooner rather than later.

Nicely done, Glenn

Charts and figures demonstrate the results, and some are at least partially convinced. Props must go to Portugal for trying this in the first place. And now the word must be spread. Good going, Glenn.

First step: Deal with the issues, not the politics.

Next step: Prison reform in the US.

Step after that is to tackle the major death-causing drug problems: Tobacco and alcohol.

Be careful what you wish for

When Bush was acquiring dictatorial powers and refusing to bear any personal responsibility for his crimes, the Democrats warned that they shoe might be on the other foot. As usual, they were right and the Republicans are now whining.

The far right is blind. They actually believed that Rove et al were delivering a Permanent Republican Majority. Morons.

Not to let Obama off the hook. Democrats are at their worst when they behave like Republicans. Obama has done so much right in three months that we can't let him stop at the 5 yard line. He needs to go in for the touchdown.
