You misinterpret what I write.
Yes I beleive it was the Tim Learys' of the hippie era that allowed men like Nixon to gain the upper hand in the fight. (Drugs, sex..) But I also said-these were people who took the view of drugs to thier most extreme-and never made the case for why they were FOR it-only those they were AGAINST(govt.) anyone that opposed it. An extreme view in itself-that Leary could not possibly think he could get moderates on board with such a viewpoint. I love John Lennon, and think he was a great model for what he was trying to do en message-and the right was threatened by this(and threatened to deport him.)I'm not for giving out drugs to everyone-but I do think there should be a way for people to figure out thier own minds' workings, the universe and natures workings---on thier own to find personal happiness. Nixons and Wallstreets reaction showed the paranoia(unfounded)and greed of what thier real motives were-in thier portrayals of anti-war Vietnam demonstrators as "those dirty effing hippies". The prowar generating media and corporate structure put it down-by the left easily gave them ammo by hero-worship of Leary and other extremists. The public then, without the nets to find the truth, had to take sides without knowing the full story of what either side was about or trying to achieve. Had the nets been around then, and the choices of consumerism V personal happiness, free choice, and peace (what I think the hippy movement was REALLY trying to achieve)--it may be a much better/different world now.
In answer to your question about why the right reacted so violently to left is pride, fear, inability to listen or understand-much like Dir. and Kitt alluded to. I only feel the comparisons necessary-not that all factors are set up exactly the same- or in leading to the same conditions now though. I was merely saying that I thought then the extremist of the Left-Druguse....took over and sealed their own fate by thier own over-consumption of drugs..I don't think all drugs are bad-but just with anything-know moderation. Many drugs that have been banned-have been over faulty batches of drugs-from toxicity from many things-but was judged based on one faulty batch only and deemed illegal. I can't recall one in particular-let me think on it..I bring this up-to say that if the left had been listened to-and didn't react with the anger of a NIxon who went after drug use and made it illlegal with a vergeance-despite what good or future these drugs could have in a persons' life.
In comparison to now-we are at a polar extreme-of that consumerism rt-wing go to more than what a normal person would even call glutton. Wars, torture,....to get what we want.
so just as then-I don't think things that people write were necessarily indicative of the middle-the middle just didn't stand up. so now, just as things have gone the opposite direction-we need to be more vocal and create the world we want to live in. Not have it dictated to us as Dirigo(Hamlet) alluded to. You can't bend nature, the universe, events to your will when it goes against natural laws of order...you have to recognize this-and not be so arrogant to think you can.
Or that you even bring about a different outcome. Going against the natural laws of progression in life, nature, science, universe, mind, religion will eventually be proven correct by the laws I believe in, of karma.History of our repeating the same mistakes and NOT learning from them proves this. So it's time to stop repeating those same things, and try a different approach so that "karma" doesn't come back on all of us.
as a compromise? lol
